about

Listening back to C87, 15 years after it was first released on Uncommon Records is bringing a rush of memories back, but also revealing a ton of new depth about this album with new context driven by hindsight. I came up hearing BMS on songs like Vital Nerve and Mucho Stereo, finally getting to meet him at Ozone when I recorded Cave Theme for the Infesticons. During the same time period, I was a fan of Masai Bey, hearing him on the Paranoid Android single and later when I recorded Paper Mache. When the session for The Beginning (Paper Mache’s B-Side) was scheduled, I was floored by how down to Earth these guys were, two guys that were 110% about the music and 0% about the fame of it all. Seeing them work together on that track was really inspiring and impressionable on me. Around that time I began to build more and more with Masai about releasing music from him and I was made aware that there was an entire album of Masai and B working together, this blew my mind. In 2007, we first released C87. It’s groundbreaking tunes were heard, but not at the level they should have been which is why we are re-issuing the release again in 2022. I’ve gone back and retouched the primary, we were able to include all of the instrumentals for the first time and I commissioned a new cover from long time friend of Uncommon and amazing artist, HeDreamtMars. All laid out by DJ Jazzpants.

This album is much more experimental than I realized at the time, hearing the intense chopper sounds fly overhead on I.A.A. as Masai and B have a personal conversation with terrorists shortly after 9/11’s aftermath - just completely original and jarring to this day. The ethereal stream of consciousness of Real Dreams and BMS’ constant “Can You Handle That?”, this song captures this era perfectly in it's tone and presentation but still stands up as a classic today. At the same time, there are B-Boy mainstays on this record, like the kick off track, Sounds Like Reign, which should be a staple of any backpacker’s lore based indie rap conversations. Hearing one of my favorite BMS verses on Xtra Curricula.. never gets old as it balances with a warlock-like Masai Bey chanting down Babylon. Blueser and Rapavenge will have you screaming Masai’s lyrics back to him just as much as Paper Mache invokes. Basically, there is still so much to uncover buried deep within or buried in plain site on C87. I could go on, but I will leave some nuggets for you to discover when you play this back.

I hope this release will stand to further historically document this incredible meeting of the minds between Masai Bey and BMS. At Uncommon, we are proud to be a small part in that.
